An ICE agent shot and injured a man in the Bronx on Thursday during a targeted enforcement operation, and a five-year-old child was in the vehicle.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed outrage and demanded ICE stop enforcement in New York City. Protesters gathered at the scene after the shooting. Mamdani said he spoke with President Trump about the shooting, describing the situation as an unconscionable and incredibly serious one.

The shooting

The shooting took place at roughly 4pm in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, per NYPD. Early reports indicated agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. Cellphone video published by the New York Times showed an agent in a yellow vest holding what appeared to be an assault rifle while talking on the phone, and other witness video showed several agents in the street, one armed and another restraining a man on the ground. Videos showed bullet holes in the windshield of an SUV, per NY1. A witness told the City Reporter she saw a man bleeding on the ground in front of a car and an agent holding a small child. NYPD police commissioner Jessica Tisch said the NYPD located the child with a family member after a wellness check. The man was alive and hospitalized. The child was believed to be physically unharmed.

The man federal agents targeted

DHS said the man was from the Dominican Republic and was the target of the enforcement operation. DHS alleged the man had associations with the Trinitarios, described by the US justice department as a transnational criminal group. DHS said the man had a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, possession of drugs, and weapons possession. DHS did not name the man. DHS did not provide evidence of his background and has previously faced backlash for falsely accusing immigrants of being gang members after they were shot by agents. Tisch alleged the man was 28 years old and had been arrested twice in New York City in 2023 and 2025. DHS said the man was arrested by police in New York in December 2023 and released a few days later.

Officials respond

Mamdani said he had been negotiating with President Trump and Homeland Security secretary Mullin for the release of the man ICE agents shot, and those negotiations were unsuccessful. Governor Kathy Hochul said she spoke to President Trump about the shooting and expressed outrage on behalf of New Yorkers. Hochul asked that any body camera footage of the shooting be released to the public. Trump had not yet commented publicly on the shooting as of late Thursday evening.

Protests and outrage

Protesters chanted ‘we want justice’ and ‘ICE off our streets now.’ Protesters held signs saying ‘Jail all killer ICE agents’ and ‘Leave our neighbors alone.’ Protesters also gathered at a local hospital where the man was reported to be receiving treatment; NYPD set up barricades and protesters clashed with police. Demonstrators banged drums and shouted ‘Shut it down’ and ‘ICE out!’ Bronx borough president Vanessa Gibson said, ‘We are a working-class community. We don’t deserve this type of treatment from the White House.’ Public advocate Jumaane Williams called on those with privilege to take more risk to protect those who don’t. Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, called for an independent investigation led by New York officials, release of footage, and prosecution of the officer who fired. Hands Off NYC and the New York Immigration Coalition held an emergency press conference in the area. Mamdani, in a statement on X, said: ‘I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities. Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery. Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.’ He ended with the words ‘Abolish ICE.’

A broader pattern

Since Trump returned to office, US immigration officers have shot at least two dozen people, including three US citizens who were killed, per one analysis. An ICE shooting caused the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis in January. Last month an immigration officer shot Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez, 28, during a traffic stop in Texas, The Guardian reported. A Guardian analysis in July found most federal claims that agents fired in response to ‘vehicular attacks’ have fallen apart under scrutiny. ICE arrests have hit record levels, with the agency pivoting from high-profile raids to more quietly dispatching agents into communities, according to The Guardian. New York is one of several American cities that bars its police officers from assisting with federal immigration enforcement.
